General Store Cafe Set to Re-Open in August

Pittsboro, NC – I used to frequently meet with clients at the General Store Cafe (GSC) in downtown Pittsboro. At times I felt like it was my second office.  Unfortunately, GSC had to close it’s doors in January of this year, leaving a hole in the center of Pittsboro community life. Now, it’s set to reopen toward the end of summer.

General Store Cafe in Pittsboro

The General Store Cafe, previously home to a Chevrolet dealership, opened in 1994.  Since 2002, it’s been a cafe and a community center, supporting local artists, musicians, and non profits. Every weekend the stage was open to local musicians, often to a standing room only crowd. They also spent the first Monday of each month helping raise money for different local non profit organizations.

It has always been a Pittsboro favorite for lunch, dinner, eclectic gifts and a good music scene. A place where families, business folk, young and old, gathered to break bread. The recession hit hard at the General Store Cafe and sadly, it closed in January this year.

GSC Re-Opening With New Ownership

I learned about GSC re-opening from the blog of The Better Sleep Store in Chapel Hill. It’s a wonderful blog full of community news and interesting local information.

Greg Lewis is a Pittsboro resident, restaurateur and businessman. He owns Catering by Design in Cary.

Lewis was a fan and frequent patron of General Store Cafe (GSC). In a small town, the loss of a prominent gathering place is deeply felt. Lewis felt he could do something about it.

Greg bought the business out of bankruptcy and plans to renovate the interior. The menu will most likely be revamped a bit, but the tradition of good food and live music will be carried on. GSC is tentatively slated to re-open in August 2012.

I can’t wait to start meeting clients and friends again at the old Chevy dealership with good aroma of home cooking in downtown Pittsboro, right across from the Chatham County Courthouse.
