Bluebird Hill Lavender

Lavender Harvest Celebration at Bluebird Farm

Pittsboro, NC – Doesn’t this sound cool: helping to harvest the lavender at Bluebird Hill Farm right here in Chatham County, NC.

Bluebird Hill Farm

Bluebird Hill is a small farm where Norma Burns specializes in growing herbs, specialty vegetables, cut flowers, native plants, value-added farm crafts and food products. In July, 2010, Bluebird Hill became USDA Certified Organic.

The farm is located outside of Bennett, a small town in the southwest corner of Chatham County. From Pittsboro, it’s a straight shot down Rt. 902, about 25 miles – a beautiful drive at this time of year. From Siler City, Bennett is even closer – maybe 20 minutes. See it on a map.

But it’s like being in another world. Right here in Chatham County.

Harvesting the Lavender

Last year, Bluebird Hill had about 250 volunteers, a band, box lunches and a bundle of lavender for each participant.

The lavender harvest is set for this weekend – Saturday and Sunday, June 1 – 2, 2013. If you’d like to volunteer, email Norma Burns at [email protected]. She might be full up for this year, or she might need a few extra hands.

Other Pleasures at Bluebird Hill Farm

Bluebird Hill does a great job with community outreach, workshops and farm attractions.

You can fish in their pond for Bass, Catfish, and Blue Gill. You can learn about bees, beneficial and predatory insects, bats and purple martins and how to attract birds in the garden.

They offer workshops on growing, eating and medicinal uses for plants.

Visitors can also buy teas, herbs, and spice rubs made from Certified Organic products grown on the farm.

They have a great blog, too. I just learned about Clivia, a flower I haven’t yet tried at my house.

Must Visit

I can’t make it this weekend. But I’m going to make time to visit Bluebird Hill Farm. It sounds like one of those places that make Chatham County so great.
