Take Root at the Root Cellar
Now that we are a few weeks into the New Year, you may be thinking, “What’s new for me to try?” Make this the year one to support local businesses in and around the Chatham County area. To start with, look no further than Pittsboro’s new addition, The Root Cellar. Located at 35 Suttles Road – Penguin Place, they are now open for a tasty breakfast, lunch or dinner experience!
Not just a restaurant, The Root Cellar laid down its roots in Chapel Hill in 1998 and has grown to feature its own catering company, bakery and café. Open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., there is no need to end the holiday parties anytime soon!
What it’s About:
“Although we offer a casual dining experience for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, we’re serious about the food we serve.”
Never underestimate the power of a scratch-made sandwich, pizza or a local cup of coffee. Local goes a long way! The Root Cellar takes pride in supporting North Carolina farmers and the food that is grown right in our backyard. That’s quality you can eat! Oh, and drink. They also house many NC craft beers and more than 300 wines!
The Root Cellar roasts all of their turkeys, chicken and pork inside their four walls along with grinding their own hamburger and sausage meats. We can’t forget about the produce! Their delectable dishes showcase seasonal vegetables from local farmer’s markets and original recipes for their jams, mayo, dressings and pickles!
Visit their location to shop a variety of culinary gifts and take-home items, such as peanut butters, BBQ sauces and salsas.
Giving Back:
The Root Cellar is not only about having good food; they’re about having a good heart as well. In striving to create relationships with local North Carolina farmers, you will taste just how fresh their ingredients are. Their dedication to their local community grows deep. Owners, Sera Cuni and Susan White are avid supporters of organizations that work to end hunger and advocate for equal rights, especially in regard to the LGBT community.
Other partnerships they support are with TABLE in Carrboro, LGBT Senior Group of Chapel Hill, The Arc of Orange County, arcBARKS® Dog Treat Company, Extraordinary Ventures and many local artists.
You can help buy purchasing a gumball from one of their gumball machines! Quarters collected from each month are donated towards different nonprofits within the Triangle area.
The Food:
Who wouldn’t want to wake up to two scrambled eggs and Ashe County cheddar on an herb cheddar biscuit? Or end the day with a bowl of sautéed shrimp, button mushrooms, bacon, garlic, white wine and grits? Sounds like a pretty good day. Breakfast is served from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., lunch and dinner is also on the menu, with dinner being served from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Don’t forget about the coffee and baked treats as well!
