What's SUP?

What’s SUP?

While we don’t want to imagine lacing up our winter boots or wrapping up in a wool scarf, the cooler months are on their way. That means there are just several weeks remaining for the summer activities that you love the most! For an exciting combination of nature, learning and outdoor exercise, you’ll want to give LYF SUP a try, or a paddle.

LYF SUP delivers a variety of classes, events and camps for standup paddleboarders of all experience levels on Jordan Lake. With several unique class opportunities coming up through October, we can’t wait to hear about your own experience on the board!

The LYF SUP Story:

Founder Allison Martin-Attix demonstrated her passion for surfing, standup paddleboarding and yoga from a young age. A certified PaddleFit and World Paddle Association instructor, Allison fearlessly leads one of just a few ASI (Academy of Surfing Instructors) certified SUP schools in the United States, down the road in Chapel Hill.

Over the years, Allison has found a way to connect her knowledge of and love for water sports, meditation and yoga. She has been able to hone her skills by building up the SUP community around Jordan Lake as well as teach the importance of protecting North Carolina’s ecosystems.

As members of Surfrider and NRDC, LYF SUP hosts local cleanups and events that encourage an eco-friendly mindset. A percentage of their profits are donated annually to environmental causes.

SUP School:

Group SUP 101 takes place every Saturday at 9:15 a.m. from May 4th – October 12th. As a beginner paddler, you’ll learn the basics of proper stretching techniques, equipment, safety regulations and paddling. If you are already familiar with the basics, this is the perfect time to start perfecting those skills!

The lesson will last two hours and includes instruction, all gear and breaks. Reserve your spot today, as classes are limited to seven people!

Private Coaching SUP 101 can be booked by appointment only and can be scheduled as a private session, a semi-private session or as a group. Or, you can sign up for the First Sunday Group Coaching for graduates of SUP 101 of individuals with prior experience. The content of each class will depend on the experience levels within the group.

SUP Yoga & Meditation:

Who says the only place to relax is the spa? Head out on the open water instead! ALOHA Sunday SUP Yoga is offered every Sunday until October 13th from 8:45 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. All levels are welcome! Practice your balance as you do yoga on a SUP beside a lakeside cove. Picturesque, right? Learn the basics on the beach before paddling out onto the water for your yoga session.

SUP Meditation is offered most Thursdays through September at 6:15 p.m. Lasting 90 minutes, you will be guided in a seated beach meditation followed by freestyle paddle at sunset. LYF SUP is redefining what it means to staycation!

Special Events:

On Sunday, August 18th from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m., all yogis are welcome to join the Sunset SUP YIN Yoga/Yoga Nidra session. After a relaxing half-hour paddle, enjoy the practice of sunset yoga in a peaceful cove. Yin Yoga traditionally moves at a much slower pace, in which yogis hold poses for longer periods of time. Following a session of Yin Yoga, you will paddle out to begin your practice of Yoga Nidra.

The $55 fee includes instruction, board rental, paddle, anchor, PFD and leash!

This month, you are also welcome to attend the Flashback Friday SUP Social! On Friday, August 16th from 6:15 p.m. – 8:15 p.m., wear your favorite retro styles as you paddle out to watch the sunset. Basic SUP experience is required to participate. SUP socials are $25 to attend or $5 if you are bringing your own board and gear.
