Haw River Summer Camps
Chatham County, NC – Late winter and early spring might be the best time of year to go kayaking or canoeing. My family just loves the Haw River Canoe and Kayak Co. But it’s not too early to think about summer camps.
Haw River Summer Camps
Haw River Canoe & Kayak (HRC&K) in Saxapahaw offers two Summer Camps – a half-day paddle camp and a full-day adventure camp. Can’t let the kids hang around the house all day!
In the paddle camp, campers develop paddling skills, as well as receive instruction in paddling technique, safety, and river navigation.
Paddle Camps are from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM five days a week.
Fee: $195/week per child.
In adventure camp, campers learn outdoor living skills such as orienteering, shelter-building, and tree and plant identification.
Adventure Camps are from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM five days a week.
Fee: $250/week per child.
Camp is open to youth ages 10 to 15, availability is limited to 14 campers per group. Campers will be grouped by skill level and/or age. Location: Campers will meet at the Hwy 15-501 access parking lot next to Haw River on the first day.
Registration opened on February 1st, 2013, so get on it!

Adult Fun on the Haw
HRC&K also offers tours and classes for all ages. They easy part about all this is that they provide everything you need – equipment, instruction and a safe environment to have outdoor fun.
These classes cover everything from beginner courses to how to roll-over in a kayak (an important skill – believe me!). They also offer a 10 hour introductory course that covers the basics of sea kayaking.
There are 3 different classes offered for canoeing. A basic intro class, an introduction to river canoeing and an introductory class for whitewater rafting canoeing.
Picture this – Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga. I can’t picture it which is why I want to check it out. In this category, they also have an intro to Stand Up Paddleboarding class.
Canoe Slalom!
In a recent newsletter I got, I found out the Carolina Canoe Club is testing the installation of canoe/kayak slalom gates on the Haw River near the Saxapahaw Mill Race Paddle Access.
Slalom is a sport that requires paddlers to navigate through a course of hanging gates in the fastest time possible.
This is still in the test stage but could be permanent in the future. How exciting!
